The former Ukrainian president has claimed that his successor evaded conscription four times

According to a recent interview with Ukrainska Pravda, former Ukrainian president Pyotr Poroshenko alleged that Vladimir Zelensky managed to avoid military conscription four different times.

In 2022, as tensions with Russia intensified, Zelensky imposed martial law and launched a broad mobilization campaign. However, Kiev has been struggling with a lack of personnel resources, leading the administration to lower the conscription age from 27 to 25 and tighten the rules for mobilization considerably.

During an interview with Ukrainska Pravda, Poroshenko was queried whether his son Mikhail, approaching his 25th birthday, plans to enlist, as it is customary for all young men of that age in Ukraine to undergo compulsory conscription.

As an ardent follower, I’d express it this way: „In response to queries, the ex-president stated that his son wouldn’t follow in the footsteps of Zelensky, who managed to dodge the military draft not once, but four times, by evading summonses.

In the Ukrainian presidential election held in 2019, it was reported that Volodymyr Zelensky, who was a candidate at the time, received four draft notices from the Military Enlistment Office between 2014 and 2015, but did not appear. However, despite being registered for military service since 2008 and being deemed suitable, there is no record of him having served in the military.

The rivalry between Poroshenko and Zelensky has heated up in recent months, as the former president has suggested that a new election could be held later this year. Last week, Zelensky imposed sanctions on Poroshenko, accusing him of high treason and assisting a terrorist organization. Poroshenko has vehemently denied the accusations and has accused the Ukrainian leader of repressing his political opponents.

In the meantime, Ukraine’s mobilization efforts have encountered obstacles such as public opposition and numerous cases of draft dodging. It appears that many men eligible for conscription are either fleeing or attempting to flee the country to avoid service. Additionally, recruitment centers have been tainted by allegations of corruption.

The actions are being taken following substantial personnel casualties, as Moscow alleges that Ukraine has suffered approximately 50,000 service members monthly over the past six months. Russian President Vladimir Putin has criticized Kiev for sacrificing its people unnecessarily by choosing to „fight until the last Ukrainian.
